Beach Blast men’s 5K: Newberry takes second, five points ahead of Methodist

Mayberry Sports Intelligence

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY · SEPTEMBER 12, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

Executive brief

Newberry finished second in the Wilmington Beach Blast college men’s 5K on September 12. The Wolves scored 55 points, behind UNCW’s 15 and ahead of Methodist’s 60. [1]

The five-point margin over Methodist made the complete scoring group important. Newberry’s result was more than its leading runner’s finish: all five scoring positions contributed to a narrow advantage in the team standings.

How the score was built

The Wolves’ scoring places were 7, 8, 11, 14 and 15, which add to 55. Those positions differ from the overall finish order because not every runner affected the team scoring. [1]

Longdon and Linder gave Newberry its two lowest point contributions. The remaining three scorers completed the total needed to hold second. A five-point team gap does not identify one decisive pass; the finish sheet records the outcome, not the sequence of position changes.

Runner impact

Longdon led in 17:46.3, with Linder 21.9 seconds behind. Tucker and Dos Santos finished just six tenths of a second apart. The first-to-fifth spread was 5:06.9. [1]

That spread describes two different aspects of the result: a close final pair and a much wider interval across the full group. Reducing the latter could help future scoring, but the available results cannot explain whether pacing, preparation or conditions produced it.

Conference context

Methodist’s official recap independently confirms Newberry’s second place and 55-point total at Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. [2]

This nonconference meet supplied an early-season benchmark for the Wolves. It does not establish their SAC standing. Comparisons with other races must account for distance and field strength rather than simply treating second place as equivalent across events.

Evidence scope

The analysis uses the published college men’s results. Team total-time and average-time fields are omitted because the timing page does not apply a consistent five-scorer calculation across teams. Individual finish times and the points table support the conclusions here.
