Decisive stretches

Catawba opened with 12 kills and one attack error in a 25–9 first set. The Wasps improved to 13 kills and five errors in the second, which ended 25–21. In the third, Emory & Henry drew within 22–20 before Catawba took the last three points through a Maggie Ayers kill, a setting error and a Lauren Patrick–Ayers block. [1]

Player impact

Lillie Kate Rogers led Catawba with 15 kills, Maggie Ayers added 11, Camden Bizot supplied 30 assists and Riley Hill recorded 20 digs. Tori Boling produced 12 kills on .385 hitting for the Wasps, giving the visitors an effective individual scoring option even as their team attack struggled. [1]

Mayberry’s take

The teams took almost the same number of swings, making the efficiency difference especially clear. Catawba produced more kills with fewer than half as many errors. The result was not simply a consequence of one team receiving many more attacking opportunities.

Boling’s performance prevents a fair account from treating every part of the Wasps’ offense alike. The challenge was expanding that productive return across more rotations while limiting the unsuccessful swings that ended rallies.

Catawba’s final three points also show the value of closing a set after the margin narrows. The strong opening was useful, but the sweep still required a response when the Wasps moved within two points late in the third.

Conference context

Catawba moved to 5–1 overall and 1–1 in the SAC. Emory & Henry stood 0–5 and 0–1. [1]
