WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY · SEPTEMBER 4, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

## Executive brief

Coker won the Downback Invitational women’s 3.5K at Methodist University on September 4\. Its 22 points comfortably led Elizabeth City State’s 51 and Methodist’s 55\. [\[1\]](#source-1)

The result combined a leading individual performance with enough depth to control the team scoring. It also illustrates why overall race placing and team points need to be read separately.

## Official results — event profile

## Why the points differ from the finish order

Artz finished second overall but contributed one point as the first finisher from a scoring team. Coker’s five scoring positions—1, 2, 5, 6 and 8—totaled 22\. [\[1\]](#source-1)

Guilford’s recap confirms that six schools had female competitors, but only three supplied scoring teams. [\[2\]](#source-2) The Cobras therefore won a three-team scoring competition within a broader individual field. That is a more precise description than treating all participating schools as ranked teams.

## Runner impact

Artz led Coker in 14:39.4\. Wilkerson followed in 16:08.2, with Alonso, Lowrimore and Maxwell-Smith completing the scoring five. Their first-to-fifth spread was 5:58.3\. [\[1\]](#source-1)

A wide points victory and a wide time spread can coexist. Here the team score measures success against the opposition that completed scoring lineups, while the spread identifies how far apart Coker’s counted finishers were. Neither metric should replace the other.

## Conference context

The 29-point margin over Elizabeth City State provided Coker with a clear winning start at this meet. [\[3\]](#source-3) For subsequent assessment, the useful question is whether the scoring depth holds when the field grows stronger or the race length changes.

This was a nonconference early-season race. It supports recognition of a team win without establishing a SAC ranking or predicting performance over a different course.

## Evidence scope

Official timing results and two participating-school recaps agree on the team outcome. The table uses the timing service’s displayed tenths; school recaps sometimes retain hundredths. No splits or tactical claims are inferred.
