WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY · SEPTEMBER 4, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

## Executive brief

Tusculum placed twelfth and Emory & Henry thirteenth in the Eye Opener women’s 5K in Spartanburg. The teams were separated by 22 points. [\[1\]](#source-1)

Mayberry’s assessment: both programs have a clear baseline from which to assess progress. The useful response to a finish near the back of a field is to identify opportunities within the scoring group, rather than reduce the performance to the headline place alone.

## Runner impact

Jesica Mbhamali led Tusculum, finishing 57th overall in 20:07.1\. Zoey Hulatt led Emory & Henry in 75th at 20:53.4\. [\[1\]](#source-1)

A leading runner can limit the early points in a team score, but the next four counting finishes determine how much of that advantage survives. Both teams therefore need to evaluate the connection between their leaders and the rest of the lineup, rather than focus exclusively on their fastest times.

## The scoring picture

Tusculum’s five scoring positions were 45, 65, 72, 76 and 77\. Emory & Henry’s were 59, 67, 69, 80 and 82\. [\[1\]](#source-1)

The distributions show why team analysis needs more than the first finisher. A stronger middle position can offset part of a deficit elsewhere, while points added at the back of the group can reverse an advantage at the front. The total measures the complete counted performance.

## Conference context

This shared course offers a direct comparison for this meet. It does not determine how either program will fare later in the SAC, and there is no basis here for inferring an injury, a training problem or an individual’s potential from one finish.

The report uses final results only. It does not assign causes to time gaps or compare the clock with unrelated courses. A meaningful follow-up will examine whether the counted runners improve their position against comparable opposition while maintaining a complete, consistent lineup.
