MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY · SEPTEMBER 4, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

## Executive brief

Tusculum finished sixth and Emory & Henry tenth in the Eye Opener men’s race at Milliken Research Park in Spartanburg. Clemson won the 8K competition. [\[1\]](#source-1)

Mayberry’s assessment: Tusculum’s front-end results gave it a stronger position in this field, while Emory & Henry’s result provides a useful early measure of the depth still to be developed.

## Runner impact

Miles Carson led Tusculum in 16th overall at 26:06.6\. Nathan Lawson and Jackson Wright followed in 27th and 29th. Davis Norman was Emory & Henry’s first finisher, 60th in 27:33.0\. [\[1\]](#source-1)

Those leading performances explain part of the contrast, but they should not stand in for the entire scoring picture. Cross-country results depend on five counted runners, so a team needs both a competitive leader and support throughout its scoring group.

## The scoring picture

Tusculum’s counted places were 13, 23, 25, 43 and 45; Emory & Henry’s were 49, 57, 66, 68 and 69\. [\[1\]](#source-1)

Tusculum’s first three counted positions were substantially lower than its final two. That points to an opportunity to bring the back of the scoring group closer to its leading runners. Emory & Henry’s priority is broader: improving across the group would reduce the accumulation of points throughout the lineup. These are interpretations of the final scoring distribution, not claims about what caused it.

## Conference context

Competing in the same race permits a direct comparison on the day, but it does not establish the eventual SAC order. Lineups, courses and fitness can change as the season develops.

The report uses final placements and times. Several intermediate timing entries on the result page appear incomplete or irregular, so no split-based tactical narrative is offered. That keeps the assessment anchored to the stable final results rather than turning questionable timing segments into a story about pacing.
