FOOTBALL · AUGUST 27, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

## Executive brief

Anderson opened its season with a 20–3 loss at Furman on August 27 in Greenville. The Trojans finished with six net rushing yards against 268 for the Paladins. [\[1\]](#source-1)

Mayberry’s assessment: Anderson’s defense kept the score more competitive than the yardage totals, but the offense could not build a sustained response. Evaluating only the margin would understate the imbalance on the ground.

## Decisive possessions

Anderson’s field goal late in the second quarter cut Furman’s lead to 10–3\. The Paladins then answered with a nine-play, 73-yard touchdown drive that ended as the half expired, extending the margin to 17–3\. Furman added the only second-half points on a fourth-quarter field goal. [\[1\]](#source-1)

The touchdown before the break was the pivotal separation. Anderson had just reduced the deficit to one score; conceding another touchdown immediately meant its next successful possession would no longer be enough to draw level.

## Player impact

Wilson Edwards passed for 154 yards without an interception. Kenneth Brown caught six passes for 75 yards, while Carter Wit contributed nine tackles and an interception. [\[2\]](#source-2)

Those contributions show why the loss should not be reduced to a lack of effort or a single position. The defense produced a takeaway and the passing game completed useful plays. The missing element was enough combined offensive progress to turn those moments into points.

## Mayberry’s take

Anderson produced no rushing first downs. [\[1\]](#source-1) That made the passing game responsible for much of the available offensive movement. The evidence supports a concern about rushing effectiveness, but it does not identify a particular blocking assignment or play call as the cause.

Holding Furman to three points after halftime was a positive defensive outcome. It also created opportunities for a comeback that the offense could not use. Both observations belong in the evaluation; one should not erase the other.

## Conference context

The nonconference opener left Anderson 0–1\. [\[2\]](#source-2) Before SAC play, the useful priority was improving the offense’s ability to generate manageable downs and convert possession into scoring chances.

This report uses the official box score for scoring order and totals. It does not infer tactical adjustments from statistics alone.
