Golden Eagle men’s 6K: Lincoln Memorial takes third with 69 points

Mayberry Sports Intelligence

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY · SEPTEMBER 4, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

Executive brief

Lincoln Memorial placed third in the Golden Eagle Invitational men’s 6K at Cookeville on September 4. Its 69 points left it 14 behind Chattanooga and 22 ahead of Austin Peay. [1]

Mayberry’s assessment: the team finish reflected both a strong lead runner and the position of the full scoring group. Cross-country evaluation needs those two views together; one high individual placing does not determine the team result.

Scoring group

TFRRS records LMU’s scoring positions as 5, 12, 14, 15 and 23, totaling 69. Overall race places differ because runners outside scoring teams also appeared in the finish order. [1]

That distinction prevents a common misreading of the results. Adding overall finishing places would produce the wrong team score. It also means an athlete’s contribution should be discussed within the scoring field rather than assuming every listed runner affects the standings identically.

Runner impact

LMU’s leader finished seventh overall in 19:34.6. Conner Chandler followed in 20:19.5, Roman Borghetti-Metz in 20:33.6, Joel Boerkey in 20:41.9 and Vance Laster in 21:24.6. [1]

The first-to-fifth spread was 1:50.0. That is a useful description of this group on this course, rather than a universal target or proof of how the runners paced themselves. Splits would be required to explain where the gap developed.

Mayberry’s take

The result leaves a clear comparison point for future races: can LMU reduce its scoring gap to the teams ahead while maintaining separation from those behind? A faster lead time alone would not necessarily deliver that improvement; every scoring place contributes.

The school’s recap described a podium opening and identified Converse’s September 19 meet as the next event. [2] That offered an opportunity to assess the group again, but comparisons should account for different distances, courses and fields.

Conference context

This invitational was an early-season test rather than a SAC championship result. It supports a measured assessment of LMU’s starting position, not a conference ranking forecast.

Source note: the recap contains inconsistent points, placing and time details. This report uses the official TFRRS results: 69 points and five scoring teams, distinct from the broader group of participating institutions.
