FIELD HOCKEY · RETROSPECTIVE · SEPTEMBER 3, 2026

Executive brief

Kutztown began its 2026 field hockey season with a 7–1 road victory over Adelphi on September 3 in Garden City, New York. A four-goal second quarter turned a 1–0 lead into a 5–0 halftime advantage and supplied the decisive separation.

The Golden Bears generated 26 shots to Adelphi’s nine and held a 16–5 edge in penalty corners. Six Kutztown players scored, led by Ellie Myers with two goals. Adelphi’s only goal came from a third-quarter penalty stroke; Kutztown then added two fourth-quarter finishes.

How the game turned

Rachel Galasso opened the scoring at 10:12, with Marlee Fetrow credited for the assist. That was the only goal of the first quarter. Kutztown’s second-quarter attack changed the scale of the match quickly.

Myers scored at 16:57, and Anna Harris followed at 17:27. Those goals, 30 seconds apart, pushed the lead from one to three. Jordan Stroup then scored during the same quarter, and Myers added another at 26:24. By halftime, Kutztown had scored five unanswered goals.

Adelphi reduced the margin when Lana Mignon De Wet converted a penalty stroke at 33:04. The Panthers won the third quarter 1–0 on the scoreboard, but entered the fourth still four goals behind. Marissa Rice scored at 53:53 and Taylor Vaccaro at 56:38, completing Kutztown’s seven-goal afternoon.

Chance creation and the margin

Kutztown put 20 shots on goal, compared with Adelphi’s four. The Golden Bears’ advantage in both total attempts and corners gave them repeated opportunities to extend the lead. Those numbers are consistent with the scoring pattern: pressure translated into a concentrated second-quarter run and another pair of goals late.

The second quarter accounted for four of Kutztown’s seven goals. It was the only period in which either side scored more than twice. That concentration is central to understanding the result; a competitive opening quarter became a five-goal halftime gap before Adelphi could score.

Player impact

Myers led the scoring with two goals and recorded five shots on goal. Harris’s first goal as a Golden Bear arrived between Myers’s two finishes. Galasso supplied a goal and an assist, while Fetrow was credited with two assists.

Stroup contributed a goal and the assist on Vaccaro’s final finish. Rice and Vaccaro added the fourth-quarter goals that restored and then widened the margin after Adelphi’s penalty stroke. The scoring spread gave Kutztown six different goal scorers rather than a result dependent on a single finisher.

Lorelai Lehenky and Tess Adolf split the goalkeeper duties, with Lehenky playing the first half and Adolf the second. Adelphi’s penalty-stroke goal was the sole concession. Individual save totals are not needed to explain the outcome: the attack built a substantial halftime lead, and Adelphi scored only once in the second half.

PSAC perspective

The win made Kutztown 1–0 overall against a nonconference opponent. Adelphi finished the opener 0–1. The result gave the Golden Bears a strong opening performance without deciding anything in the PSAC conference standings.

For this match, the defining strength was the ability to turn repeat attacking opportunities into a rapid scoring sequence. The four-goal second quarter, six scorers and large corner advantage all point to the same conclusion: Kutztown created separation collectively, then maintained it through the second half.
