WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL · SEPTEMBER 15, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

Executive brief

Lenoir-Rhyne swept Catawba at Shuford Arena, 25–18, 27–25 and 25–13. The middle score explains why the match deserves more than a routine sweep summary: the Bears trailed 21–13 in the second set before recovering. Their strongest attacking set followed, with 14 kills and no attack errors in the third. [1]

Mayberry’s assessment: Lenoir-Rhyne won through both recovery and efficiency. Catawba created a substantial opportunity to level the match, but the Bears prevented it from becoming a set win. The result reflects that missed opportunity as well as LR’s clear statistical advantages.

Official full-match statistics. Hitting percentage is kills minus attack errors, divided by attempts. [1]

Decisive stretches

LR led 13–6 in the opener and finished it 25–18. Catawba then reversed the pressure. A six-point run carried the visitors from 7–8 to 13–8 in set two; later, Giulia Allison’s ace made it 21–13. [1]

Brooke Aeschliman’s kill began six consecutive LR points. That burst included four Catawba attack errors, one on a block, and an Addison Vary kill. Catawba stopped the run on a service error, but LR soon drew level at 22–22. From 25–25, Averie Dale supplied a kill and Julie Donato served the deciding ace. [1]

The distinction is important: Catawba lost an eight-point lead without reaching set point. LR’s recovery was sustained across several scoring exchanges, rather than one isolated late escape. Catawba’s review should focus on restoring a reliable way to win the next rally when a lead begins shrinking.

The third set produced a different picture. LR turned a 9–7 advantage into 18–7 with nine straight points. The error-free attacking line describes attack attempts only; the Bears still committed service errors. Calling the entire set mistake-free would overstate the evidence. [1]

Player impact

Dale and Vary each finished with 11 kills. Dale hit .471 and participated in four blocks; Vary recorded no attack errors on 25 swings. Alicia Barbarito supplied 25 assists, and Morgan Blankenship’s three aces led the team. [1]

Rebekah Ayers and Lillie Kate Rogers each contributed 10 Catawba kills. Their totals came on different workloads: Ayers took 19 swings with four errors, while Rogers took 36 with seven errors. Riley Hill collected 16 digs. Those figures identify individual production without reducing the match to blame for one player; reception quality and the difficulty of each attack are not established by the totals alone. [1]

Mayberry’s take — equal volume, different returns

Both teams attempted 102 attacks. LR produced nine more kills and 10 fewer attack errors from that equal volume, the clearest explanation of the efficiency gap. The Bears also led in aces and blocks. Catawba’s small advantage in digs did not offset those differences.

For LR, the useful standard is the controlled third-set attack, not reliance on another large comeback. For Catawba, the second set proves competitive stretches were available. The next step is turning them into completed sets while limiting the consecutive errors that reopen a match.

Conference context and outlook

The Bears left the match 5–3 overall and 3–1 in the SAC; Catawba stood 7–2 and 3–2. LR’s match recap listed Wingate next on September 18, with both teams holding 3–1 conference records after their September 15 wins. That made the next league match consequential for their early records, without establishing a championship forecast. [2]
