Millersville 5, Dominican 0: five scorers and a shutout open the season
Executive brief
Millersville opened its 2026 field hockey season with a 5–0 home win over Dominican on September 3. The Marauders took a two-goal lead in the first quarter, added two more in the third and completed the scoring early in the fourth at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The result rested on more than one attacking contribution. Five different Marauders scored, while Addy Arkhurst kept Dominican off the board in her first career start. Millersville finished with advantages of 19–5 in shots, 12–2 in shots on goal and 13–3 in penalty corners. Those margins describe a match in which the home side repeatedly created opportunities while limiting the number of attempts its goalkeeper needed to handle.
The decisive stretches
Erin Esterhuizen scored at 1:13 with Peyton Bean credited for the assist. The early breakthrough gave Millersville the lead before Dominican could settle into a scoreless opening period. Zoe Angelinas made it 2–0 at 12:04, completing the first-quarter scoring.
Neither side scored in the second quarter. That kept the halftime margin at two, but the third quarter brought another short burst of Millersville goals. Tiana Weeks scored at 33:53, and Lani Derickx followed at 34:55. In just over a minute, a two-goal advantage became four.
Alaina Culbert scored at 46:07 to make it 5–0. The remaining minutes produced no further change to the score. Millersville therefore scored in three separate quarters, rather than relying entirely on the opening burst.
What the numbers explain
The 13–3 corner advantage matters because it shows how often Millersville earned a structured attacking opportunity. The first goal followed a penalty corner, according to the school’s account. The total alone does not tell us how every corner was executed, but it supports the broader picture of sustained pressure.
Twelve of Millersville’s 19 shots were on target. Dominican put two of its five attempts on goal, and Arkhurst saved both. Dominican’s seven saves prevented a larger margin. The clean sheet combined those two interventions with a team performance that allowed relatively few attempts.
Player impact
Esterhuizen supplied the first goal, Angelinas extended the early lead, and Weeks and Derickx gave the third-quarter surge its finishing touch. Both Weeks and Derickx scored in their first appearances as Marauders. Culbert’s fourth-quarter goal completed a five-player scoring distribution.
Bean’s assist helped establish the lead. Arkhurst’s two saves secured the shutout. Millersville also used a broad rotation; the school’s recap specifically highlighted contributions from players entering from the bench. That depth was part of the opening-day performance, though the individual scoring and goalkeeper figures remain the clearest measurable contributions.
PSAC perspective
Millersville left the opener 1–0 overall, while Dominican was 0–1. This was an opening nonconference result, so its immediate value was a successful start rather than a change in PSAC standings.
The useful takeaway is the combination of scoring variety and defensive control. Five finishers shared the goals, two brief scoring stretches built separation, and Dominican never found a response. The opening win established those strengths on the day without requiring a prediction about the rest of the season.
