## The assessment

The opening week offered results without a stable hierarchy. East Stroudsburg and Lock Haven made field position and finishing count; Slippery Rock needed a defensive touchdown and overtime to overcome a large rushing deficit. Gannon’s passing had productive moments, but Davenport’s long rushing scores exposed a different problem. The common lesson is to distinguish team points from ordinary offensive production. Short fields, return scores and overtime all mattered. These are first observations, not reliable opponent-adjusted ratings. The next useful evidence will be whether winners can repeat their effective possessions without receiving the same exceptional opportunities, and whether the losing teams correct the specific mechanisms that caused separation.

### East Stroudsburg at Seton Hill

2026-08-27

East Stroudsburg combined short fields with a long closing drive to win 27–20.

ESU gained only 20 more yards than Seton Hill. Two early kickoff fumbles gave the Warriors consecutive possessions at the Griffins’ 21, and both became touchdowns. The stronger evidence for sustained control came later: protecting a 20–17 lead, ESU drove 97 yards in 17 plays and used 10:57 before scoring with 2:39 left. Harrison Susi’s official net rushing total was 111 yards, supporting an attack that gained 258 on the ground. Seton Hill generated more yards per play but had fewer opportunities. The long final drive is a more useful test of ESU’s offensive potential than assuming two return fumbles will recur.

### Minnesota Duluth at Slippery Rock

2026-08-27

Slippery Rock’s 45–43 double-overtime escape was powered by takeaways and a late offensive recovery.

The Rock won despite allowing 370 rushing yards and converting none of 10 third downs. The pivotal event was Brett Kwoka’s forced fumble on fourth-and-11, returned 65 yards by Aaron Scales Jr. with 3:13 left. It cut a 30–20 deficit to three without requiring an offensive drive. DaOne Owens then helped move the offense from its own eight into field-goal range, and Connor Macek tied the game with 20 seconds left. Owens supplied the winning two-point run in the second overtime. This demonstrated recovery under pressure, but not a reliable run defense or possession offense. Regulation ended 30–30; the 45 points include overtime.

### Gannon at Davenport

2026-08-29

Gannon’s passing production could not offset Davenport’s 420 rushing yards in a 32–20 loss.

Ty Hurst and Donell Mason gave Gannon a credible way to move the ball: their first touchdown completed a 99-yard drive after a goal-line stand. Davenport answered with third-quarter scoring runs of 75 and 84 yards by Cephus Harris. Those two snaps produced 159 rushing yards and turned a seven-point halftime margin into a 20-point gap. Gannon finished with just 61 rushing yards, leaving little balance. Its two red-zone visits both produced touchdowns, illustrating how finishing efficiency can look good while a team struggles to create enough chances. Davenport’s late two-point return belongs to special teams rather than ordinary offensive scoring.

At Shepherd, count long rushing gains conceded and compare Gannon’s rushing output with its 61-yard opener. Sustaining drives matters more than a perfect rate on very few red-zone visits.

### Lock Haven at Shippensburg

2026-08-29

Lock Haven recovered from 9–0 down and beat Shippensburg 24–16 despite being outgained.

Shippensburg’s 327–264 yardage edge did not translate into better finishing. Its opening 22-play, 75-yard drive consumed 12:40 but yielded only a field goal. Lock Haven benefited from repeated short fields, and Carson Nagle’s two touchdown passes helped turn the game. Its fourth-quarter insurance score was different: an 11-play, 75-yard drive ended with Ezequiel Johnson scoring at 8:48 for a 24–9 lead. Shippensburg later reached the Lock Haven four but followed with four incompletions. Six sacks and lost opportunities near the goal line explain why Roman Jensen’s 266 passing yards were insufficient. The win supports Lock Haven’s situational execution more clearly than broad offensive superiority.
