## Mayberry's take

The opening round separated the standings more sharply than the scores. Four results were decided by one to seven points, including Catawba at Mars Hill in overtime. A 1-0 start matters, but these margins offer limited evidence of a large gap between most opponents.

Lenoir-Rhyne has an important comparison win: 21-14 at Newberry. Newberry still sits ahead of LR in the raw margin ranking because its other result was a 38-3 win over Reinhardt. LR opened 45-3 against Virginia Union before losing 23-34 to West Alabama. Different opponents and uneven sample sizes make raw scoring margin an incomplete measure of strength.

Wingate is another case where the record needs context. Its 23-24 loss at Carson-Newman followed a 36-13 win at Delta State and a 13-21 loss at UNC Pembroke. The Bulldogs have a positive overall points differential despite a 1-2 record. Their home game against Newberry offers a direct comparison between two teams seeking their first conference win.

Anderson followed a 3-20 loss at Furman and a 21-14 win over Keiser with a 39-21 win at UVA Wise. The next trip to Tusculum tests whether that scoring improvement carries into a second conference game. This report does not attribute the improvement to personnel or tactics without supporting evidence.

## How Tusculum protected its lead

Tusculum led 28-17 early in the fourth quarter. Emory & Henry cut the deficit to two with 5:09 remaining, but its two-point rush attempt failed. On the final Wasps possession, Judah Knight broke up the fourth-down pass. Tedros Gleaton then converted fourth-and-three with a five-yard run as time expired.

Those late possessions explain how the result was secured more directly than the final score alone. They support a game-specific observation about closing execution, not a prediction that Tusculum will consistently win close games.

The two 1-0 pairings are the clearest tests at the top: Mars Hill at Lenoir-Rhyne and Anderson at Tusculum. Carson-Newman visits a UVA Wise team seeking its first win. Newberry at Wingate and Emory & Henry at Catawba pair teams that lost their conference openers.

Editorial watch: LR-Newberry already showed why a raw margin table cannot settle a matchup. The same caution applies to every September 19 game. Numerical win odds and projected scores are withheld until a model has been tested on historical games without using future information.

## Scope and methodology

This pilot covers the 10 schools on the official 2026 SAC football standings. It does not extend football coverage to every school in the general site directory. Results stop at September 12\. The next-game schedule is a September 15 snapshot.

Official records and scores come from conference and school athletics sites. Calculations use full-precision values, with displayed margin per game rounded to two decimals. Conference wins and losses reconcile at five each. Scores in all five conference openers reconcile with the conference PF/PA figures. No injury, roster or tactical claims are included without verified reporting.

All editions use the same report record. The workbook adds editable formulas for games, win rate, scoring margin and descriptive rank. CSV files preserve individual tables and source references. This is a pilot review edition. Subscriber billing and protected download delivery have not launched.
