The weekend supplied a useful reminder that standings move in several different dialects. Football spoke in field position. Volleyball mostly used straight sets, except when Tusculum and Newberry decided five were more entertaining. Soccer produced both clinical separation and stubborn scoreless resistance. Field hockey delivered the widest margin of the weekend. Cross-country and tennis added results that should not be forced into the same analytical mold as head-to-head team games.

## Football

- Anderson 14, Tusculum 7
- Mars Hill 15, Lenoir-Rhyne 7
- Catawba 24, Emory & Henry 10
- Carson-Newman 42, UVA Wise 7
- Newberry 25, Wingate 22

**What changed:** Carson-Newman supplied the only decisive football separation and remained the cleanest top-of-board result. Mars Hill won a low-scoring road game at Lenoir-Rhyne, while Newberry earned the weekend's tightest football win at Wingate.

Special teams mattered. Mars Hill made both field-goal attempts and placed four punts inside the 20\. Catawba's Kyle Perry returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown. Newberry made two field goals—the final three-point margin—but missed two conversions, leaving the door inconveniently ajar. Across the five games, 49 punts were followed by 71 points before the next change of possession or period end.

## Women's volleyball

- Lincoln Memorial 3, Emory & Henry 0
- Carson-Newman 3, UVA Wise 0
- Wingate 3, Catawba 1
- Tusculum 3, Newberry 2
- Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Coker 0
- Anderson 3, Mars Hill 0

**What changed:** Four sweeps created clear separation. Wingate recovered from Friday's five-set loss at Lenoir-Rhyne by winning at Catawba, while Tusculum survived the only five-set match of Saturday. Anderson, Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial and Lenoir-Rhyne left no ambiguity on the scoreboard.

## Women's soccer

- Columbus State 4, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
- Catawba 1, Emory & Henry 0
- Newberry 1, Lincoln Memorial 0
- Anderson 2, Carson-Newman 0
- Mars Hill 1, Tusculum 0

**What changed:** The SAC games were defined by prevention: three 1–0 results and Anderson's 2–0 shutout. Columbus State's 4–1 nonconference win at Lenoir-Rhyne was the exception and the clearest warning. Newberry and Mars Hill converted narrow margins into full points; Catawba did the same at home.

## Men's soccer

- Catawba 0, Emory & Henry 0
- Newberry 2, Lincoln Memorial 0
- Anderson 3, Carson-Newman 2
- Wingate 1, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
- Tusculum at Mars Hill was postponed

**What changed:** Anderson won the weekend's five-goal conference match. Newberry shut out Lincoln Memorial. Catawba–Emory & Henry produced no breakthrough. On Sunday, Lenoir-Rhyne took 41 shots and played more than 72 minutes with a man advantage, yet Wingate escaped Hickory with a 1–1 draw behind Cole Freeman's 15 saves. That was not balanced territorial play; it was a goalkeeper changing the value of every possession.

## Field hockey

- Newberry 9, Barton 0
- Belmont Abbey 4, Coker 0
- Lander 2, Wingate 0
- Frostburg State 2, Converse 1, overtime

**What changed:** Newberry produced the conference's most emphatic result. Lander earned a road shutout at Wingate. Coker was shut out at home, and Converse came one overtime sequence short at Frostburg State.

## Cross-country

At the Converse meet, Anderson's men finished second, Catawba fourth, Lenoir-Rhyne sixth and Lincoln Memorial seventh. In the women's race, Catawba finished third, Anderson fifth, Lincoln Memorial sixth and Lenoir-Rhyne ninth. These placements are comparable within the same meet; raw times from different courses should not be treated as interchangeable.

## Tennis

UVA Wise's women beat Davis & Elkins 7–0 and Salem 6–1\. The Cavalier men beat Davis & Elkins 5–2 and Salem 6–1\. Anderson's women recorded a 7–0 result at Pfeiffer. Newberry–Coker listings appeared as final on the SAC calendar without published scores, so no score is invented here.

## Bottom line

The weekend's strongest signals were Carson-Newman's football separation, Mars Hill's complementary-football win, Newberry's field-hockey margin, Anderson's soccer shutout and volleyball sweep, and Wingate goalkeeper Cole Freeman turning a one-sided shot count into a conference point. The next reports should test whether those performances repeat—not merely admire the scoreline after the fact.

**Evidence note:** Results were reconciled against the South Atlantic Conference composite schedule and participating-school schedules, box scores or result pages where published. Unscored tennis listings remain explicitly unresolved. Data cutoff: September 22, 2026, 3:00 a.m. Eastern.
