Wilmington Beach Blast: Fonseca leads four Newberry finishers

Mayberry Sports Intelligence

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY · SEPTEMBER 12, 2026 · RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

Executive brief

Alexis Fonseca finished eighth to lead Newberry’s women at the Wilmington Beach Blast. Four Wolves completed the college race; Newberry did not receive a team score in the official results. [1]

Mayberry’s assessment: this event should be read as a set of individual performances rather than assigned an unsupported team placing. Completing a scoring lineup and improving individual results are related but distinct objectives.

Why there is no team placing

The official sheet lists UNCW and Methodist in the women’s team table and four Newberry finishers in the individual results. The host won the team competition. [1]

A standard cross-country team score needs five finishers. Four successful individual completions therefore cannot be turned into a third-place team result. Preserving that distinction gives readers an accurate account without diminishing the work of the athletes who raced.

Runner impact

Fonseca and Evans were Newberry’s first two finishers. Conklin and Favela completed the Wolves’ finishing group, while Charleigh Troutman is marked DNS on the result sheet. [1]

The non-start designation establishes participation status only. It does not establish an injury, illness or coaching decision, and none is inferred here. Likewise, a finish time alone cannot explain the technical or tactical reasons for a performance.

Conference context

For Newberry, the useful follow-up is to combine a complete scoring group with progress from the runners already contributing. That would allow future results to be evaluated through both individual improvement and team competition.

The race was held at Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. [2] Its clock should be considered in that setting, rather than compared directly with the Wolves’ shorter season-opening course. The report uses published finishes and does not calculate speculative team scores.
